Amidst the bustling energy of Paris, a tranquil haven awaits discovery: Wissous. Wissous, a name whispered through centuries, first appearing in French historical records as “Vizoor” in the 11th century. Imagine Wissous in its early days, nestled within the royal domain, its destiny intertwined with the powerful Bishop of Paris, who held sway as its lord until 1548. Wissous remained largely rural, its lifeblood drawn from the cultivation of cereals and potatoes, until the 20th century. The arrival of one of the world’s largest airfields, Paris-Orly Airport, transformed Wissous. This once-sleepy countryside haven experienced an eightfold population explosion from 1900 to the present day. Wissous sits on the fertile Longboyau plateau, its landscape shaped by the Bièvre River and dotted with ponds and basins. The echoes of history resonate in the streets of Wissous. The church of Saint-Denis, a magnificent structure dating back to the 12th century, stands as a testament to the town’s enduring spirit. It’s a captivating blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. During World War II, Wissous played a significant role, serving as a base for anti-aircraft defenses during World War I and occupied by German troops in World War II. The town’s railway station bore witness to the tragic deportation of political prisoners. A poignant story unfolded in Wissous during the war: an American B-17 bomber, crippled by enemy fire, made a desperate landing in the wooded area now known as Domaine Les Étangs – Espace Arthur-Clark. The heroic pilot, Arthur Clark, chose to sacrifice himself rather than risk crashing into the town’s homes. Today, a memorial stands in the park, a solemn reminder of his bravery and the shared history between Wissous and the United States. Modern Wissous balances its growth with a commitment to its “village” atmosphere. New housing developments, like the Saint-Éloi district, have sprung up, attracting residents from neighboring towns. Yet, Wissous retains its charm, boasting numerous parks and green spaces. It’s a testament to its commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Wissous continues to evolve. The planned arrival of the Grand Paris Express metro line promises to further connect this unique town with the heart of Paris. As you explore Wissous, remember its journey through time. From a quiet farming village to a dynamic town embracing progress, Wissous offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of French history and the resilience of its people.
