Stepping into the realm of innovation, we find ourselves at the Wissenschaftliches Zentrum für Informationstechnik-Gestaltung, or ITeG, a hub of interdisciplinary research nestled within the University of Kassel. This isn’t just another building; it’s a crucible where technology meets societal responsibility. The Wissenschaftliches Zentrum für Informationstechnik-Gestaltung tackles the complex question of how IT should be shaped to foster innovations that benefit society. Established in 2005, the ITeG began as a research collaboration between three departments: Communication Technology, Technology Law, and Business Informatics. Their goal was simple yet profound: ensure IT systems gain acceptance, mitigate negative impacts, and unlock positive opportunities. The founding directors, Klaus David, Alexander Roßnagel, and Udo Winand, laid the groundwork for what would become a leading center for socio-technical research. By 2014, the University of Kassel recognized the ITeG’s growing importance, establishing it as a Wissenschaftliches Zentrum. This elevated the ITeG to one of four key research centers shaping the university’s profile. Kurt Geihs became the founding director of this new phase. The Wissenschaftliches Zentrum für Informationstechnik-Gestaltung examines the design of socially desirable information technology from a unique socio-technical perspective. It considers the development of an IT system socially desirable when it achieves both user acceptance and aligns with accepted norms and values. This involves empirical studies of user behavior and forecasting the impact of IT on societal values. The ITeG doesn’t shy away from the complexities of conflicting values, norms, and interests; it critically reflects on them as part of its research process. Today, the Wissenschaftliches Zentrum für Informationstechnik-Gestaltung unites a diverse range of expertise. From Communication Technology to Knowledge Processing, eleven different fields contribute to the center’s interdisciplinary approach. The ITeG also benefits from an advisory board with members from academia, industry, and the public sector. This board provides valuable guidance, ensuring the research remains relevant and impactful. The Wissenschaftliches Zentrum für Informationstechnik-Gestaltung’s commitment to responsible IT design continues to shape the future of technology, one innovation at a time.
