Beneath the watchful gaze of Wise, we find ourselves in the courtyard of the Jindal School at UT Dallas. This isn’t just any sculpture. Wise, a mirrored stainless steel owl, stands proudly on its cement pedestal. It’s a bit over three feet tall, reflecting the world around it in a distorted, yet captivating way. Wise arrived here on October 8th, along with another piece by the same artist, “Great Potential.” Brad Oldham, the artist, is a Dallas local, known for his whimsical creations, like the “Traveling Man” in Deep Ellum. Wise and Great Potential are just two of the growing collection of art pieces at the Jindal School. Many of the artists featured are from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and they were invited to the grand opening of the school’s new addition. Wise, the owl, is more than just a shiny object. It’s a symbol of wisdom and knowledge, perfectly suited for a school environment. Imagine students passing by, catching glimpses of themselves in the owl’s mirrored surface. It’s a funhouse mirror effect, but perhaps it also encourages them to reflect on their own potential, much like the accompanying sculpture, “Great Potential,” suggests.
