Could this tranquil oasis, Wingrove Park, once have been the site of a bustling circus? Wingrove Park, nestled in Eltham, is a small, serene park managed by the local council. It offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational features. But before it was Wingrove Park, this area was known as Bremner’s Flats. Imagine, in 1958, the vibrant tents of Ashton’s Circus and Zoo rising against the sky right here at Wingrove Park. The air crackled with excitement as families gathered to witness daring trapeze artists, aerialists, and high-wire acts. Elephants from Malaya paraded, clowns tumbled, and trained horses performed thrilling rodeo acts. The legendary Captain Shultz, formerly of Barnum and Bailey, held audiences spellbound with his “Cage of Death,” featuring ten lions and lionesses. Wingrove Park, in its former guise, echoed with laughter and gasps of wonder. This area was renamed Wingrove Park around 1970. However, the echoes of those circus days, the thrill of the high-wire, and the trumpeting of elephants, still linger in the spirit of Wingrove Park.
