Hidden within Dresden lies a railway with a story as unique as its name: the Windbergbahnmuseum. Imagine a railway so steep, so winding, it earned the nickname “Saxon Semmeringbahn,” after the famed Semmeringbahn in Austria. The Windbergbahnmuseum chronicles the fascinating tale of this railway, Germany’s first mountain railway. Opened in 1857, the Windbergbahn wasn’t built for leisurely trips or scenic views. Its initial purpose was purely practical: hauling coal from the pits south of Dresden. The line snaked its way up the Windberg mountain, lending the railway its name. The terrain dictated its design, resulting in tight bends with a minimal radius of 85 meters and a steep upward gradient of 1:46.7. This challenging topography made it a marvel of engineering, a testament to the ingenuity of its creators. The Windbergbahnmuseum, housed in the reconstructed passenger building of the Dresden-Gittersee station, brings this history to life. The museum’s exhibits showcase the railway’s evolution from a coal transport line to a passenger railway. The Windbergbahn served the public from 1908, connecting Dresden central station to the village of Possendorf, earning it the affectionate nickname “Possendorfer Heddel.” The Windbergbahnmuseum offers a glimpse into the past. You can see historic rail vehicles and a functioning mechanical signal box, all preserved in the style of the 1920s. While the tracks between Dresden Central Station and Dresden-Gittersee fell silent in 1998, the dream of the Windbergbahn lives on. The association tirelessly works towards restoring the line, hoping to once again hear the rumble of historic trains echoing through the hills. Even today, on special occasions, the historic Windberg observation car travels sections of the revitalized track, a symbol of the railway’s enduring legacy.
