A sanctuary of peace amidst London’s bustle stands before you. This is the Wimbledon Mosque. Established on June 25 1976 it is one of London’s first purpose-built mosques. It proudly serves as the first mainstream purpose-built mosque in South London.

Before 1976 the local Muslim community prayed in a property on Melrose Avenue. Planning permission was granted in 1973. It allowed the construction of a two-story building. This building would serve as a mosque prayer hall. The plan included the use of the adjoining property at 264 Durnsford Road. This would provide additional residential accommodation. Six car parking spaces were also planned.

Initially designed by Jack Godfrey-Gilbert the Wimbledon Mosque was constructed between 1975 and 1977. The Wimbledon Mosque extended in 1986. This expansion incorporated the adjoining properties. This was necessary due to the growing Muslim community. The permanent address became 262-270 Durnsford Road.

In 2004 planning permission allowed a second-floor extension. This accommodated the increasing number of worshippers. Today the mosque has three floors and a basement. It can accommodate over 600 worshippers. The car park now holds 10-12 cars.
