A colossal white structure. That’s the Wilshire Federal Building. Its stark beauty dominates the landscape.

Even public safety announcements.

Construction took four years. Government modifications caused delays. The building was designed for 2000 employees. However it could shelter 13000 people. Civil defense shelters were incorporated throughout. This was during the Cold War. Safety was paramount. The Veterans Administration was an original tenant. Corridors and doorways were designed to be wheelchair accessible. Other tenants included the IRS. NASA’s audit division was there. The U S Weather Bureau also had offices. Even the FBI had a presence. Ten high-speed elevators are located on the exterior. This creates flexible interior space.

The Wilshire Federal Building isn’t just a building. It’s a piece of history. It’s a reflection of a bygone era. It witnessed protests. Disabled veterans occupied Senator Cranston’s office in 1974. Iranian-Americans protested there during the 1980s. ACT UP staged a die-in in 1989. The building has been a stage for social and political movements.

Today the Wilshire Federal Building continues to serve. It houses the VA the FBI and the US State Department. Its imposing presence remains a landmark in Los Angeles.
