Founded in 1951 Wilshire Baptist Church stands before you a testament to faith and community. Fifty-five Christians gathered at the Carswells’ home dreaming of a new church. Their vision blossomed into a vibrant congregation. Initially services were held at the Wilshire Theater. By 1952 they purchased land on Abrams Road. McIver Chapel the church’s first worship space was dedicated in 1954. Wilshire thrived under Pastor Bruce McIver’s thirty-year tenure. The current sanctuary opened in 1966. Education spaces expanded in 1982. Under McIver’s leadership Wilshire embraced global missions. He became pastor emeritus in 1988.
George Mason succeeded McIver. During his 33-year tenure Wilshire evolved into a progressive inclusive community. In 1991 they voted to allow women and divorced people to serve as deacons. A significant step came in 2000. Wilshire severed ties with the Southern Baptist Convention citing restrictiveness and fundamentalism. They played a key role in establishing the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship in 1991 a partnership that continues today.
Further steps toward inclusion followed. In 2012 they began recognizing other forms of Christian baptism. In 2016 a momentous decision granted all members equal rights regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. This included leadership roles ordination and marriage. Wilshire became a member of the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists. The church established a two-year pastoral residency program in 2002. Dozens of graduates now serve in ministry across the US and beyond.
George Mason retired in 2022 becoming senior pastor emeritus. Timothy Peoples a former resident became the new senior pastor. He and his wife arrived from North Carolina. He continues Wilshire’s legacy of inclusivity and faith. Wilshire Baptist Church remains a vibrant hub of faith community and service. It’s a place where everyone is welcome a church truly for every body.
