This grand building, a cornerstone of the Wilmette community since 1901, held more stories within its walls than I could ever hope to read. The Wilmette Public Library wasn’t always this architectural gem. Its journey began humbly in the back of Kinney’s General Store around 1880. A small group of residents, just 50 out of 419, fueled by their love of literature, pooled their resources to start a lending library. Imagine Wilmette then, a quaint village on the cusp of transformation. The library hopped between locations, finding temporary homes in a lumber company, the Methodist Church, even a grocery store. Then, a stroke of fortune. Andrew Carnegie, a renowned philanthropist known for his support of libraries, granted $10,000 for a dedicated building in 1902. This Carnegie library, opened in 1905, marked a turning point for the Wilmette Public Library. It solidified its place in the heart of the community. The current building, erected in 1951 on the site of the original Carnegie library, stands as a testament to the library’s enduring importance. The Wilmette Public Library even earned an architectural award for its design from the American Institute of Architects. It’s not just a building; it’s a living, breathing organism. Expanding in 1988 to double its size, the Wilmette Public Library strives to meet the ever-growing needs of its patrons. An astounding 94% of Wilmette residents possess library cards. This is a testament to its essential role in the community. The library has continued to innovate over the years. Its online book discussion groups have gained recognition from the American Library Association. In 2008, the library received the prestigious ALA Presidential Citation for the Game Maker Academy program. The Wilmette Public Library provides services not just to Wilmette, but also to the residents of Kenilworth through a contract established in 1983. Within these walls, countless stories unfold. From the hushed quiet of the study to the lively activity of the Teen Room, the Wilmette Public Library offers something for everyone. It’s more than just a repository of books; it’s a hub for learning, connection, and exploration.
