“Meet me at Willie” That’s what Giants fans say. They meet at the Willie Mays Statue. It stands proudly outside Oracle Park. This bronze giant is more than just a statue. It’s a symbol of San Francisco baseball history.

The Willie Mays Statue is a nine-foot-tall masterpiece. Sculptor William Behrends created it. It was commissioned in 1997 by Giants managing partner Peter Magowan. The statue was unveiled on March 31 2000. This was before Pacific Bell Park was renamed. The ballpark is now known as Oracle Park.

Originally Magowan wanted Mays’ famous catch depicted. Mays disagreed. He didn’t want his backside facing the entrance. The final design shows Mays mid-swing. A powerful moment frozen in bronze.

The statue sits at 24 Willie Mays Plaza. Twenty-four palm trees surround it. This number honors Mays’ retired uniform number. It’s a thoughtful touch. A perfect tribute to a legendary player.

After Mays’ passing in June 2024 fans left tributes. The statue became an informal memorial. Fans showed their respect and love for the baseball legend. This shows the lasting impact of Willie Mays. He continues to inspire.

The Willie Mays Statue is more than just bronze and stone. It embodies the spirit of baseball. It represents the passion of Giants fans. It stands as a testament to one of the greatest players ever. When you visit the statue you feel Mays’ presence. You’re part of the legacy. Remember to “Meet me at Willie”.
