This blue plaque marks the former residence of Reverend William Thomas du Boulay a vicar who served St Mary’s The Boltons from 1868 to 1909.

More than just a vicar he was a man of fascinating background. Born in 1832 in Weymouth Dorset he was the eldest son of a Justice of the Peace and landed proprietor. His childhood was spent amidst privilege with numerous siblings and servants. His education included divinity studies at Edinburgh University and Trinity College Cambridge. His academic pursuits culminated in a Master of Arts degree.

His ordained ministry began in Ely Cambridgeshire. He served as curate in several parishes before arriving in Kensington. He resided at this Gilston Road address with his wife extended family and servants. The numbering system on Gilston Road changed in 1912. The plaque’s location at number 43 reflects the renumbering.

His long life ended in 1921 at the age of 89. He passed away at his nephew’s home in Great Yarmouth Suffolk. He was buried in Brompton Cemetery. His legacy extends far beyond the walls of St Mary’s.
