“Waiwhauwhaupaku.” Have you ever heard that name before? It is the traditional Māori name for what we know today as William Stream. It means “Pseudopanax arboreus.” That is the five-finger tree that once grew abundantly here.

Welcome to the banks of William Stream. This waterway has a rich history. It has ecological significance. It is a vital part of Auckland’s West.

William Stream begins its journey in the Waitākere Ranges. It flows northeast. The stream then moves through rural West Auckland. Eventually, it reaches the suburb of Swanson. From there, it flows into the Huruhuru Creek. This creek empties into Te Wai-o-Pareira. That is also known as Henderson Creek. Finally, it reaches the western Waitematā Harbour.

For centuries, Te Kawerau ā Maki called this stream Waiwhauwhaupaku. They harvested its resources. Eels were a key food source. Harakeke flax grew here too. It provided materials for textiles. The stream’s valley was also a crucial path. It linked Wai Huruhuru Manawa to Pukearuhe. Pukearuhe was the pā above Swanson. It connected Waitākere River settlements as well.

The name William Stream comes from William Swanson. He settled here in 1852. He logged kauri trees. William Stream became one of the first waterways dammed for this purpose. Ironically, by the 1870s, Swanson himself criticized the logging practices.

Today, William Stream is a haven for native wildlife. New Zealand longfin eels thrive here. Short-finned eels also call it home. You might spot cran’s bully or common bully. Redfin bully and New Zealand smelt swim in these waters. Banded kōkopu, common galaxias, and torrentfish can be found here too.

The land around William Stream is an alluvial flood zone. It was once forested with tōtara, tītoki, and west coast kōwhai. These native trees are slowly making a comeback.

Since the mid-2000s, there have been efforts to restore William Stream. It’s part of Project Twin Streams. Large-scale riparian planting has transformed the area. Native flora is reclaiming the banks.

Imagine William Stream as it once was. Picture the dense forest. Envision the Māori harvesting resources. Think of William Swanson logging kauri. Consider the stream’s revival today. This waterway connects the past with the present. It shapes the future of this community.

As we leave William Stream, remember its many names. Waiwhauwhaupaku speaks to its natural history. William Stream honors a settler’s legacy. Both names remind us of the stream’s enduring importance to Auckland.
