A simple act of courage. That’s what this plaque commemorates here at the William Bloomfield Plaque. It’s dedicated to the memory of Captain William Anderson Bloomfield, a Scottish-born soldier who found his destiny under the scorching African sun. Born in Edinburgh in 1873, Bloomfield’s family emigrated to South Africa in 1878. Years later, the fires of World War I engulfed the globe, and Bloomfield, a seasoned soldier in the South African Forces, found himself thrust into the heart of the conflict. It was 1916 in Mlali, Tanganyika, now Tanzania. The air crackled with gunfire as Bloomfield and his Scout Corps fought valiantly. After a fierce enemy assault, they were forced to retreat. During the chaotic withdrawal, Bloomfield realized one of his men, a wounded corporal, had been left behind. Without hesitation, Bloomfield embarked on a perilous mission. He braved a hail of machine-gun and rifle fire as he crawled over 400 yards of open ground to reach the injured soldier. His courageous act saved the corporal’s life. For his bravery, William Anderson Bloomfield was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military honor for gallantry. This plaque stands as a testament to his courage and selflessness, a reminder that even amidst the chaos of war, heroism can bloom.
