Established in 1898 the Wilhelm-Ostwald-Institut für Physikalische und Theoretische Chemie stands proudly in Leipzig. It’s Germany’s oldest physical chemistry institute. A testament to scientific pursuit. The institute’s history is rich. It began long before its official opening.
In 1871 Gustav Wiedemann held the first physical chemistry professorship in Leipzig. He established the first Physical-Chemical Laboratory. Wilhelm Ostwald later assumed this position in 1887. He transformed a smaller laboratory into an internationally recognized center. The existing space however became insufficient.
The Saxon Parliament generously funded a new institute in 1896. 360000 marks funded the construction. The new building incorporated modern standards. It included a large and small battery room. A large workroom and equipment rooms occupied the first floor. Two lecture halls graced the second floor. One seated 140 the other 42. A geological collection filled the attic. The director even had his own apartment.
The grand opening took place on January 3 1898. Wilhelm Ostwald himself gave a keynote lecture. Distinguished figures such as Max Planck Ernst Otto Beckmann and Max Le Blanc attended. The old premises were given to Ernst Otto Beckmann to establish a new professorship in applied chemistry. Max Le Blanc succeeded Ostwald as director in 1906. He oversaw building alterations for electrochemical and photochemical research.
World War II brought devastation. Incendiary bombs destroyed the institute in 1943. The south wing suffered the most damage. Reconstruction of the north wing and parts of the central building finished in 1951/52. A lecture hall three practical rooms and 24 laboratories reopened. The workshop collections and administrative rooms resumed operations.
The 1990s saw comprehensive renovations. The institute connected to the municipal district heating system. This replaced its own hot water supply. Since 1998 the institute proudly carries its official name the Wilhelm-Ostwald-Institut für Physikalische und Theoretische Chemie. The institute’s impact is significant. It fostered the work of Nobel laureates. Svante Arrhenius’s research on the Arrhenius equation took place here. His work garnered the 2018 Citations for Chemical Breakthrough Award. The institute continues to excel. Its current research involves investigating surfaces. Modern techniques like electron- and X-ray spectroscopy are employed.
