Wilhelm-Lübke-Denkmal

Did Professor Wilhelm Lübke ever imagine his likeness gracing the grounds of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology? The Wilhelm-Lübke-Denkmal, a memorial dedicated to this eminent art historian, stands as a testament to his contributions. The memorial captures Lübke in a seated pose, a Renaissance wall fragment as his backdrop. This setting reflects his deep immersion in art history. A Greek amphora and several folios lie at his feet. The Wilhelm-Lübke-Denkmal wasn’t always intended for this location. Originally commissioned by his second wife, Helene Lübke, as a gravestone, it was meant for the Hauptfriedhof’s park wall. However, the city council, prompted by Schulleiter Gustav Wendt, recognized its significance. They convinced Helene to donate it for public display. The unveiling ceremony took place on June 12, 1895, at its first location in the Hoffstraße. The Wilhelm-Lübke-Denkmal survived two world wars, deemed “historically insignificant, but of artistic value”. Its inscription, initially just his name and lifespan, was later modified in 1954 to include “Professor W. Lübke / Art Historian / 1826–1893”. In 1964, construction of the Badisches Gemeindeprüfungsamt necessitated the monument’s relocation. During the move, the sandstone pedestal and back wall were damaged. The city commissioned sculptor Fritz Schoch to restore them. The Wilhelm-Lübke-Denkmal found its final home in 1965, where it stands today, outside the architecture building of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The memorial’s inscription reads, “Wilhelm Lübke / 1826–1893 / Professor of Art History”. It serves as a quiet tribute to the man who dedicated his life to understanding and appreciating art’s history.
