Established in 1835, the Karlsruher Lebensversicherung AG, affectionately known as “Die Karlsruher,” has a captivating history. It began as the “Allgemeine Versorgungsanstalt im Großherzogthum Baden.” This institution marked the genesis of what we know today as the Karlsruher Lebensversicherung AG. The company’s journey took a turn in 1922. During the tumultuous period of hyperinflation, the Karlsruher Lebensversicherungsbank emerged. This new entity, owned by Frankfurter Allgemeine Versicherung, was a response to the currency crisis. It took over the rights and responsibilities of the original Karlsruher Lebensversicherung in 1923, solidifying a partnership with Volks-und Raiffeisenbanken and BBBank eG. The collapse of FAVAG in 1929 led to Allianz acquiring the Karlsruher Lebensversicherungsbank. It became one of four key acquisitions, alongside other significant insurance entities. Under Adolf Franz Samwer’s direction, the company was renamed “Karlsruher Lebensversicherung” in 1937. A darker chapter saw the company temporarily labeled a “National Socialist Model Company.” In 1976, the Karlsruher Versicherungen AG was founded, consolidating the non-life insurance business previously under Karlsruher Versicherungen Versicherungsverein aG. A few years earlier, in 1973, the legal expenses insurance subsidiary KVV Rechtsschutzversicherung AG, later becoming Karlsruher Rechtsschutzversicherung AG, was established. Wüstenrot & Württembergische acquired the insurance group in 2004, integrating it into Württembergischen Versicherungen. By the end of 2005, the Karlsruher Versicherungen encompassed Karlsruher Lebensversicherung AG, Karlsruher Versicherung AG, Karlsruher Beamten-Versicherung AG, Karlsruher Rechtsschutzversicherung AG, and Karlsruher Rendite Immobilien GmbH. The company had a strong presence in sports sponsorship, notably with Karlsruher SC and BG Karlsruhe. The integration process involved merging “Karlsruher Beamten-Versicherung” and “Karlsruher Rechtsschutzversicherung” into Karlsruher Versicherung AG, which was then absorbed into Württembergische Versicherung AG. The former “Karlsruher Lebensversicherung AG” merged with Württembergische Lebensversicherung AG. Interestingly, the former “Karlsruher Hinterbliebenenkasse,” operating as a brand, adopted the traditional name “Karlsruher Lebensversicherung AG” from 2007. It exclusively offered Württembergische Lebensversicherung AG products for bank distribution. This “new” Karlsruher Lebensversicherung was eventually merged into Württembergische Lebensversicherung on January 1, 2019. The Karlsruher Lebensversicherung AG, through its various iterations and transformations, stands as a testament to the ever-evolving landscape of the insurance industry in Germany.
