Established in the 1950s by the Gonsenheim hunting association Wildpark Mainz-Gonsenheim initially housed only red deer fallow deer mouflon and wild boar. It’s grown significantly since then. The city of Mainz took over its management later expanding its animal population. Today you can see around 100 animals representing approximately 20 different species.
You’ll encounter more than just the majestic deer. The park boasts West African dwarf goats. You can even observe the playful antics of hang-bellied pigs wildcats and raccoons. Ducks owls and pheasants add to the avian diversity. For our younger visitors a special mini-zoo houses rabbits and guinea pigs. Did you know that a bird rescue station operates within the park too? It provides care for injured or sick wild birds.
The park’s transformation hasn’t been without its challenges. It faced periods of neglect. Starting in 2001 a gradual redesign began. This prioritized animal welfare and ecological considerations. Enclosures were redesigned for a more natural feel. Sichtschutze were added to improve animal comfort. The Friends of Wildpark Mainz-Gonsenheim Association was also established in 2002 supporting the modernization efforts. A mini-zoo opened in 2006 adding to the appeal.
The future of Wildpark Mainz-Gonsenheim remains uncertain. There are plans to expand this beloved park. However there are ongoing discussions about potential closure due to financial constraints. Despite these uncertainties the park remains a beloved community asset a green refuge drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
