West of Wiesbaden lies the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis. A fascinating blend of history and nature. This district formed in 1977. It combined the Rheingaukreis and Untertaunuskreis.

Bad Schwalbach became the Kreisstadt the central town. But administrative offices also reside in Rüdesheim am Rhein and Idstein. Taunusstein near Wiesbaden is the most populous city. The Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis has a rich history.

For centuries the area was a mix of different territories. Parts belonged to the Electorate of Mainz. Other parts belonged to the Duchy of Nassau. The Untertaunus area was part of the Earldom of Katzenelnbogen. After the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 Nassau was annexed by Prussia. This created the province of Hesse-Nassau. The Rheingaukreis and Untertaunuskreis were formed in 1867.

The Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis is remarkable for its geography. It surrounds the western half of the Taunus mountain range. The Untertaunus stretches north of Wiesbaden. The Windhain peak at 629.3 meters is the highest point. Southwest lies the Rheingau. This area is known for its vineyards and wine production. Extensive forests are found in the Rheingaugebirge and the Wispertaunus. These are among the largest in Hesse. The Rhine forms the southern and southwestern border. The westernmost part is part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site.

The Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis boasts impressive water resources. Its area includes a large part of the Rhine’s island region. This is especially noticeable near the Rheingau where the river reaches a width of a thousand meters. The county boundary lies in the middle of the main shipping channel. This includes several islands like the Mariannenaue. The former Hindenburg Bridge was destroyed during World War II and not rebuilt. Today the area is well served by roads and rail. The A3 Autobahn crosses the eastern part. The B42 runs along the Rhine but can flood at high water levels. The high-speed rail line between Cologne and Frankfurt passes through. Local trains connect the area to Wiesbaden Koblenz and Limburg.

The Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis has a thriving economy. It is famous for its wine production. Rheingau wines especially Riesling are world-renowned. Assmannshausen is known for its Spätburgunder red wine. Wine tourism is a major factor in the economy. The Rheingau Musik Festival and the Rheinsteig hiking trail boosted tourism. The Naturpark Rhein-Taunus protects the natural beauty for recreation. The Untertaunus has agriculture and small businesses. Many commute to Wiesbaden and Frankfurt. The area also has three universities.

The Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis is a dynamic region. It blends its history and diverse landscape into a thriving community. It is a place of beauty and rich cultural heritage. It is a place worth exploring.
