Step into Wild Side West a San Francisco legend. This isn’t just any bar it’s a living piece of history. Founded in 1962 by Pat Ramseyer and Nancy White it originally opened in Oakland. They named it after the Barbara Stanwyck film Walk on the Wild Side. In those days it was illegal for women to be bartenders in California. Wild Side West was a bold act of rebellion.

The bar moved to San Francisco’s North Beach in 1968. It became a haven for strippers. It also launched the careers of female musicians like Cris Williamson and Ronee Blakley. Famous poets like Kay Boyle and Robert Duncan even held readings there. Janis Joplin Joan Baez and Bob Dylan were among its famous patrons.

In 1977 the bar found its permanent home at 424 Cortland Avenue in Bernal Heights. They bought an 1890s Italianate building. The move wasn’t without its challenges. Initially some neighbors protested by throwing toilets through the windows. Pat and Nancy creatively repurposed these into planters in their magical garden. This garden behind the bar is a multi-level oasis. It’s a testament to their resilience and spirit.

Wild Side West has always been more than just a bar. It’s a community hub. It’s hosted numerous fundraising events. The bar supports local causes like breast cancer research. It’s been recognized for its intangible significance reflecting San Francisco’s spirit. Today Wild Side West stands as San Francisco’s last remaining lesbian bar. It continues to welcome a diverse queer crowd. It honors the legacy of its founders Pat and Nancy. It keeps their rebellious spirit alive. Their story is woven into the very fabric of this place. Come. Experience the magic.
