Dedicated to fostering free knowledge. Wikimedia Indonesia stands here as a beacon. It champions the growth of Indonesian language content. This content is freely available to everyone.

Wikimedia Indonesia’s story began with a simple coffee gathering. In 2006, seven Indonesian Wikipedia enthusiasts met. They envisioned a formal organization. This organization could connect with media and official entities. After fourteen meetings, they formalized their vision. On May 2, 2008, they drafted the organization’s articles. Initially, they considered a foundation. However, they opted for an association. This gave the most power to its members.

Wikimedia Indonesia was officially established September 5, 2008. It was validated through a notary deed. The organization started with nineteen founders. These founders contributed five million rupiah. This initial funding came solely from their initiative.

Wikimedia Indonesia gained formal recognition. On October 7, 2008, it became a local chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation. The official launch occurred on March 20, 2009. The Ministry of Communication and Information supported the launch. Christian Sugiono was introduced as the Knowledge Freedom Ambassador.

Wikimedia Indonesia is independent. It is not controlled by the Wikimedia Foundation. It also does not control Indonesian Wikipedia. It strengthens communities. It enables global citizens to gather and develop educational materials. These materials can be freely licensed.

Wikimedia Indonesia has several key programs. These include education, GLAM, content improvement, and community support. The education program enhances understanding. Volunteers learn about Wikimedia projects. They then share this knowledge. GLAM connects galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. It helps these institutions share resources. This sharing uses open licenses. The content improvement program focuses on adding content. It also improves the quality of Indonesian language content. The community program supports Wikimedia volunteer communities. These communities are spread across Indonesia.

Wikimedia Indonesia organizes various projects. These include Temu Data and Datathon Wikidata. There is also Kiwix, Kopdar and Kelas Wikidata. Pengembangan Perangkat Lunak dan Leksem is another project. WikiCendekia and WikiLatih exist too. WikiMasukSekolah and WikiGalir add to the projects. These initiatives promote collaboration. They encourage knowledge sharing.

Wikimedia Indonesia supports volunteers through grants. These grants include pulse, book and Wiki grants. WikiNusantara is an annual conference. It unites Wikimedia volunteers from across Indonesia. The conferences have been held in Sleman, Padang, Banjarmasin, and Bogor. Each conference has a different theme.

Wikimedia Indonesia is dedicated to its mission. It strives to expand free knowledge. It empowers Indonesian communities. It preserves Indonesian culture. It promotes education. Wikimedia Indonesia remains a vital force. It strengthens the Wikimedia movement in Indonesia. It helps spread free knowledge. It supports volunteers. It enriches Indonesian content online.
