Wikimedia Indonesia’s story began with a simple coffee gathering. In 2006, seven Indonesian Wikipedia enthusiasts met. They envisioned a formal organization. This organization could connect with media and official entities. After fourteen meetings, they formalized their vision. On May 2, 2008, they drafted the organization’s articles. Initially, they considered a foundation. However, they opted for an association. This gave the most power to its members.
Wikimedia Indonesia was officially established September 5, 2008. It was validated through a notary deed. The organization started with nineteen founders. These founders contributed five million rupiah. This initial funding came solely from their initiative.
Wikimedia Indonesia gained formal recognition. On October 7, 2008, it became a local chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation. The official launch occurred on March 20, 2009. The Ministry of Communication and Information supported the launch. Christian Sugiono was introduced as the Knowledge Freedom Ambassador.
