“A bridge built twice” whispers the wind. That’s the story of the Wiegandbrücke in Bremen’s Bürgerpark. Before you stands a testament to resilience a symbol of Bremen’s enduring spirit. This seemingly ordinary humpback bridge holds a fascinating secret.

The Wiegandbrücke wasn’t always here in its current form. It’s a story of construction and reconstruction a tale of generosity and unexpected challenges. In 1904 Dr Heinrich Wiegand the General Director of Norddeutscher Lloyd generously funded its creation. Architects Friedrich Wellermann and Paul Froelich designed a beautiful stone bridge a masterpiece of their time. Its construction finished in 1905. It was a triumph of engineering and design a beautiful addition to the Bürgerpark.

But the initial Wiegandbrücke had a fatal flaw. Cost-cutting measures during its construction compromised its structural integrity. By 1913 engineers realized the bridge was in danger of collapse. It faced imminent demolition. The original Wiegandbrücke had to be completely dismantled. The prospect of losing this architectural gem was disheartening.

However the story doesn’t end there. This isn’t a tale of loss but a tale of renewal. General Director Wiegand’s widow stepped up. She generously funded the reconstruction of the Wiegandbrücke. The bridge was rebuilt using the same beautiful natural stone. The design remained unchanged. It was reconstructed at a slightly lower elevation ensuring its stability. This second Wiegandbrücke stands as a proud reminder of its predecessor.

Today as you gaze upon the Wiegandbrücke you see more than just a bridge. You see a symbol of perseverance. You see a tribute to generosity. You see a story of a bridge rebuilt twice. A bridge that stands strong a bridge that bears witness to Bremen’s history. A bridge that has truly earned its place in the heart of the Bürgerpark. The Wiegandbrücke a beautiful and historic landmark in Bremen. This bridge continues to serve the Bremen citizens and delight visitors. The Wiegandbrücke is a protected cultural monument. It holds registration number 0218T020 with the State Office for Monument Preservation.
