Look closely at the building in front of you. This is the Ulrichs’sches Wohnhaus. It was built around 1840 in the classical style, and for a long time, it served as a home for those who helped shape the history of the area. The man who built this house, Hermann Friedrich Ulrichs, was a pioneer in shipbuilding. He started a shipyard near the nearby Weser River in 1838. It was a smart move, because by expanding his business onto Bremen territory, he could take advantage of the city’s ship-operating permits. The Ulrichs shipyard became one of the most essential shipyards in Vegesack. It later became the starting point of a much larger operation: the Bremer Vulkan, which became synonymous with Vegesack in the early 20th century. But this little house with its sloping roof and white facade holds a special place in the history of the area. After 1895, Victor Nawatzki, the first director of the Bremer Vulkan, lived here. Nawatzki expanded the shipyard into a huge industrial complex, making Vegesack a centre of shipbuilding innovation. His leadership was essential to the shipyard’s incredible success. Today, the Ulrichs’sches Wohnhaus is used for offices and apartments. You can still see the original facade of the house. The building is a reminder of the long history of shipbuilding in Vegesack and the remarkable stories of those who called this house home.
