Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet? Here at the Wichelshof in Bonn you can. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to centuries past. Imagine the medieval courtyard that once stood here. That’s right. The Wichelshof’s roots trace back to a 10th-century farmstead. This area was once part of a Roman military camp.

The Wichelshof you see today however began to take its current four-winged form in the first half of the 17th century. It sits majestically near the Rhine in a beautiful 19th-century landscape park. The main house a two-story showpiece was rebuilt in the latter half of the 19th century. But there are older parts. The north wing built mid-18th century is a masterpiece of half-timbered construction. Its brick infill dates from the original construction.

This infill was likely once painted a reddish hue. A high mansard roof hides another living floor. A vaulted cellar lies beneath. The interior is a treasure trove of original 18th-century features. Doors staircases and floors still speak to a bygone era of refined bourgeois life. Careful restoration work was needed. The wooden framework required extensive repair. The gaps were filled with bricks. The interior refurbishment emphasized simplicity. The ceiling beams are decorated with deeply incised lines. The room layout and the old doors remain.

Another significant building is the gatehouse dating from the first half of the 18th century. Also half-timbered with a gable roof it’s a long low structure. Its three-part layout divided into separate living and sleeping quarters is still evident. A fireplace with a hood forms the house’s heart. The original construction survives despite later additions. The original spindle staircase some doors and a Cologne ceiling remain.

Wichelshof holds significant cultural importance. In the mid-19th century it was home to the Germanist and poet Karl Simrock and his brother. Even this historic home needed restoration. The roof structure and the half-timbered construction were painstakingly restored in 2001 thanks to the German Foundation for Monument Protection. This is the last completely preserved Franconian courtyard within Bonn’s city limits. Step inside. Let history wrap around you. Feel the stories whisper from the wood and stone. This is more than a building it’s a legacy.
