Perhaps, as you stand here, you’re wondering about this solemn Kriegsdenkmal. This Kriegsdenkmal in Bonn is not just stone and inscription. It is a place that tells a silent story of loss and remembrance.

The Kriegsdenkmal is dedicated to the victims of war. It is a reminder of the cost of conflict. This memorial stands as a poignant symbol in the Kessenich area of Bonn. It specifically honors those who perished in the First and Second World Wars.

Originally, the Kriegsdenkmal started as a simple tribute. A linden tree was planted shortly after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. It commemorated four fallen soldiers from Kessenich. Initially, people called it the Victory Linden. Later, it became known as the Peace Linden.

In 1926, the Kessenich Veterans Association commissioned a formal memorial. They funded it through donations from local citizens. City Building Councilor Behr designed the Kriegsdenkmal. The Walbrück & Schlösser firm constructed it. The dedication took place on May 1, 1926. A night-time ceremony drew a large crowd. Twenty-five associations from the Bonn district veterans association attended. Bonn’s Lord Mayor and city administration members were also present.

Initially, the Kriegsdenkmal listed 279 names. These were the victims of the First World War. In 1956, the names of 380 people killed and 110 missing from Kessenich during the Second World War were added. The Kriegsdenkmal has been under historical preservation since 1991.

The Kriegsdenkmal’s design reflects the New Objectivity style. A circular base supports six Muschelkalk pillars. These pillars form a ring. An architrave sits atop them. The architrave bears an inscription. It quotes the Gospel of John: “No one shows greater love than the one who lays down his life for his friends.” Each pillar features a carved soldier’s head with a Wehrmacht helmet. Iron crosses adorn the wrought-iron grilles connecting the pillars.

The Kriegsdenkmal serves as a space for reflection. It combines remembrance with symbols of life and hope. The tree embodies this hope. It represents the cycle of nature and the Christian belief in resurrection.

Looking closely, you will see the names of the fallen. They are inscribed on the outer sides of the pillars. They are grouped by the years of the wars. One pillar bears an inscription. It reads: “Unforgotten are the 110 missing from our community. At the time of this memorial’s construction, their return was still hoped for. Grateful remembrance also connects us with the war victims of our new fellow citizens in Kessenich.”

The Kriegsdenkmal quietly stands at the corner of Nikolausstraße and Rosenburgweg. It is a reminder that peace and freedom should never be taken for granted. It urges us to remember the past. It implores us to strive for a better future. A future where such sacrifices are never needed again. Take a moment to reflect on the stories etched in stone. Remember the people of Kessenich.
