The renovation added 2,500 square feet to the existing 11,000-square-foot building. This expansion allowed the Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library to incorporate innovative technology and collaborative spaces. Patrons now enjoy a makerspace and a job training center. There is even a museum inside.

The Chicago Public Library wanted to bring the Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library into the 21st century. The design complements the original mid-century architecture. A glass facade frames the entry. This creates a secure and welcoming entrance.

The library’s design also revived an underutilized exterior courtyard. Natural light now floods the interior. The courtyard serves as a communal space for library users.

The Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library sits on a remediated brownfield site. Grants from the EPA helped clean up soil and groundwater contamination. The project earned awards for its environmentally-friendly approach.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel emphasized the library’s role. He stated that it would bridge generational and cultural divides. The Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library offers 21st-century services.
