Doesn’t it seem like just yesterday this spot was a brownfield? Now, it is the Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library. This library stands as a beacon of knowledge and community in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood.
The Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library is more than just a repository of books. It is a vibrant hub offering diverse resources for all ages. In 2018, a significant remodel and expansion transformed the library. bKL Architecture, led by Danielle Tillman, created a modern, light-filled space.
The renovation added 2,500 square feet to the existing 11,000-square-foot building. This expansion allowed the Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library to incorporate innovative technology and collaborative spaces. Patrons now enjoy a makerspace and a job training center. There is even a museum inside.
The Chicago Public Library wanted to bring the Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library into the 21st century. The design complements the original mid-century architecture. A glass facade frames the entry. This creates a secure and welcoming entrance.
The library’s design also revived an underutilized exterior courtyard. Natural light now floods the interior. The courtyard serves as a communal space for library users.
Inside the Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library, you will find a multi-purpose room. An early learning center is available too. State-of-the-art equipment and expanded study spaces await visitors. Refreshed collections and increased computer capacity enhance the experience.
Notably, the Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library houses one of three “Experience Labs”. These labs combine YOUmedia digital labs for teens with CyberNavigator digital skills tutoring for adults. The library is the first branch to feature a dedicated Maker Lab.
The Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library sits on a remediated brownfield site. Grants from the EPA helped clean up soil and groundwater contamination. The project earned awards for its environmentally-friendly approach.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel emphasized the library’s role. He stated that it would bridge generational and cultural divides. The Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library offers 21st-century services. These services help residents succeed for generations. The Whitney M. Young Jr. Branch Library is LEED Gold Certified. It stands as a testament to community investment and sustainable design.
