Can you imagine a beach tucked away, almost secret, between the dramatic cliffs and crashing waves of the Tasman Sea? This is Whites Bay, a hidden gem on Auckland’s rugged west coast. Whites Bay is a small beach north of Piha, nestled between Te Waha Point and Fishermans Rock Point. Its remote location adds to its allure. You won’t find bustling crowds here, just the raw beauty of nature and the rhythmic roar of the ocean. Whites Bay has a rich history, intertwined with the stories of early settlers and even a notorious folk hero. The beach takes its name from John and Francis White, early settlers in the area. Francis, a blacksmith, acquired a significant portion of the West Coast land from Te Kawerau ā Maki. Later, in 1925, Jim Rose purchased land above the beach and built a bach, accessible only by a challenging climb. Even Sir Edmund Hillary, the legendary mountaineer, recognized the beauty of this secluded spot and built his own bach at Whites Bay. Perhaps one of the most intriguing tales connected to Whites Bay involves George Wilder, a prison escapee who became a folk hero. Wilder sought refuge at Whites Bay in 1963, finding temporary solace in its isolation. The beach’s unique ecosystem adds another layer to its captivating story. Marram grass dances in the wind across the sand dunes, while Coprosma and toetoe add splashes of green to the landscape. Above, grey-faced petrels nest among the pohutukawa trees, their calls adding to the symphony of the sea. Whites Bay is more than just a beach. It is a testament to the power of nature, a haven for those seeking solitude, and a place where history and legend intertwine.
