Established in 1892, Whitehorse Manor Junior School stands as a testament to enduring commitment of education in Thornton Heath. Originally three separate schools, Whitehorse Road Junior Mixed school, Whitehorse Road Senior boys’ school and Whitehorse Road Senior girls’ school, the institution evolved over decades to become the Whitehorse Manor Junior School we see today.
Whitehorse Manor Junior School has a rich history. In 1911, the Junior Mixed school closed. Its pupils joined the boys’ and girls’ departments of the senior schools. This created Whitehorse Road Post-Infants boys’ school and girls’ school. A reorganization in 1921 led to the renaming of these schools to Whitehorse Manor.
Significant changes occurred in 1930. The senior girls moved to Ecclesbourne, and Ecclesbourne’s senior boys transferred to Whitehorse Manor. Junior boys from Whitehorse Manor went to Ecclesbourne. Junior girls from Ecclesbourne came to Whitehorse Manor. This resulted in Whitehorse Manor Senior boys’ school and Whitehorse Manor Junior girls’ school.
In 1961, Whitehorse Manor Junior School became a mixed school when the boys’ and girls’ schools combined. This marked a new era of inclusive education.
Since April 2011, Whitehorse Manor Junior School is part of the Pegasus Academy Trust. The school continues to thrive under the leadership of executive headteachers Jolyon Roberts and Lynne Sampson. The head of school is Nina Achenbach.
Whitehorse Manor Junior School caters to pupils in Year 3 through Year 6. The school has expanded its intake from two to three forms. Currently, there are 450 pupils enrolled. Each of the 15 classes has a maximum of 30 pupils.
Between 2010 and 2014, a major building project added seven classrooms. New offices, an extended hall and a library were also added. Hayhurst and Co. designed the scheme. It won a RIBA London award in May 2014.
In 2014, Whitehorse Manor Junior School opened an annexe. The Brigstock site is about 1.1 km away. It allows the school to educate another 210 children. The original site had reached its full capacity.
Agnes Mason once taught at Whitehorse Manor Junior School. She was an associate of D. H. Lawrence. She later joined Lawrence at Davidson Road School in 1907. Helen Corke’s autobiography describes the school and its staff during that time.
Notably, Wilfried Zaha attended Whitehorse Manor Junior School. He is an international footballer who plays for Crystal Palace, England, and Ivory Coast.
Whitehorse Manor Junior School continues to evolve. It provides quality education for children in Thornton Heath. The school’s history and commitment to growth make it a pillar of the community.
