A testament to resilience, the White Rock Chapel Plaque stands before us. It whispers stories of faith, perseverance, and the enduring spirit of a community. The White Rock Chapel Plaque, established in 2000 by the Texas Historical Commission, commemorates not just a building, but a legacy of racial reconciliation and understanding. This site, at 5555 Celestial Road in Addison, Texas, holds the echoes of a history spanning over a century. The story begins during the Civil War, when enslaved people from nearby plantations like the Coit, Caruth, and Obier estates gathered for worship. These meetings, facilitated by white circuit preachers, planted the seeds of faith that would blossom into the White Rock Chapel. After emancipation, these families purchased land, building homes and a church near White Rock Creek. In 1884, a log church was erected, a testament to their newfound freedom. The White Rock Chapel congregation endured for thirty-four years in this location, facing the constant threat of floods. Tragically, a 1918 flood claimed a family and swept away precious church records. This devastating event prompted the move to higher ground, to the very spot where the White Rock Chapel Plaque stands today. The land was a gift from S.S. Noell, a white landowner who often worshipped with the congregation. The church was renamed Christian Chapel C.M.E. in honor of a beloved pastor. The White Rock Chapel story continued with hardship. A storm destroyed the new wood-framed church, and its replacement was lost to a suspected arson fire in 1960. The resilient congregation worshipped in the small 1918 parsonage for 21 years. The current brick church was finally built in 1981. The White Rock Chapel Plaque serves as a powerful reminder. It speaks of a journey marked by faith, perseverance, and the enduring spirit of a community. It’s a testament to the power of reconciliation and the importance of preserving history. It calls us to remember the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us and to continue their work of building a more unified and understanding world.
