“Good land” whispers the wind across Whenuapai. This northwest Auckland suburb holds a rich history a story woven from pacifists and planes.

Whenuapai wasn’t always known by that name. Theophilus Wake a resident in 1911 initially called it Waimarie meaning “calm waters”. But a post office needed a unique name so Whenuapai meaning “good land” in Maori was chosen. It officially became Whenuapai on March 23 1914. The area however was already known as Rarawaru the name of the stream flowing towards the Upper Waitemata Harbour.

Long before Wake’s arrival Whenuapai buzzed with activity. Ockleston’s pottery and a brickworks thrived on the Kotukutuku Inlet. Tobacco farming flourished too producing over 120 000 pounds by 1929. However this industry eventually shifted to Motueka.

Then came the rumble of warplanes. In 1938 the New Zealand Government acquired hundreds of acres to build a base for Wellington bombers. Whenuapai became a key site during World War II.

Post-war Whenuapai took on a new role. From 1945 to 1965 it served as Auckland’s international airport a temporary arrangement that lasted two decades. Imagine Pan American’s Stratocruisers and TEAL’s flying boats alongside military aircraft. The air crackled with the energy of global travel and military might.

Whenuapai wasn’t just a hub for planes. It was a nexus for airlines. Pan American British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines National Airways Corporation and TEAL all operated from Whenuapai. They flew to destinations across the Pacific and even to London. Domestic flights connected Whenuapai to every corner of New Zealand.

The airport’s success however was short lived. The arrival of larger jets like the DC-8 and Boeing 707 exceeded Whenuapai’s runway capacity. A new airport was needed. Mangere took over in 1965. Whenuapai returned to its military roots becoming RNZAF Base Auckland.

The story of Whenuapai is one of transformation. From peaceful settlement to wartime base from international airport to military aerodrome. Even today it remains vital housing squadrons like No 5 Squadron and the RNZAF Parachute Training Unit. Whenuapai’s legacy is etched in the land itself a testament to its remarkable history.
