“Whale’s Tail,” they call it. This playful sculpture sparks joy at Alki Playground. But the Whale’s Tail is more than just a fun artwork. It represents community spirit and artistic vision.

Alki Park was once run-down. An unimpressive park needed a transformation. Mark took action to rebuild it for the community. His father, Charlie O’Neil, inspired him. Charlie had created a park to honor a friend.

Mark faced hurdles. He needed cooperation from the city. Community members and public figures needed to support the transformation. There were fundraising dinners and wine tastings. The community rallied together.

Artist Rich Beyer created the fantastic Whale’s Tail sculpture. It adds a magical touch for children. The park features a ship and sea-foam colored ground. There are octopuses and starfish. A play set with a fort and slides entertains kids of all ages.

Mark dedicated a bench to his father, Charlie. Charlie died in a boating accident in 2008. The bench sits under a cherry blossom tree. It honors Charlie’s legacy of community service.

The Whale’s Tail is cast aluminum. It measures six feet nine inches. It shows the tail of a whale in the air.

Today, Alki Park is a destination. It is voted one of the top ten parks in the city by Visit Seattle. Next time you hear “Meet me at Whale Tail,” remember this story. It’s a tale of transformation, community and art. It’s a tribute to a father’s legacy.
