Could a church find its beginning in a car wash? For Westside Baptist Church in Lewisville, Texas, that’s exactly how their story began. In 1983, Pastor Ben Smith of Lakeland Baptist Church envisioned a predominantly African American church in Lewisville. This vision became a reality thanks to the leadership of Rev. Roosevelt Brown. In 1984, Westside Baptist Church held its very first service with 50 devoted members. The location? Not a traditional sanctuary, but the Gulf Car Wash in Lewisville. The congregation thrived under Rev. Brown’s guidance, growing through passionate evangelism. They established church officers, ministries, and programs, laying a strong foundation for their future. By 1989, the congregation had outgrown their unusual first home. They moved into a newly built worship center on Bellaire Boulevard. This move marked a significant step in Westside’s journey, proving that from humble beginnings, greatness can bloom.
