From a petition to Queen Elizabeth I in 1590, Westminster City School’s intricate story began. Lady Dacre’s plea for a royal charter to educate children in Westminster led to the school’s eventual establishment. The school we see today at Palace Street opened in 1877. Westminster City School isn’t a single entity but a fusion of several historic charity schools. Originally the Brown Coat, Green Coat, and Black Coat schools, these institutions were amalgamated in 1873 under the United Westminster Schools foundation. The Green Coat School, for instance, traces its roots back to St. Margaret’s Hospital, established in 1624 by the Churchwardens of St. Margaret’s, Westminster. The Black Coat School, founded by Reverend James Palmer in 1654, educated 20 poor boys in the parish of St. Margaret. Even a Blue Coat School, founded in 1688, contributed to Westminster City School’s heritage after its closure in 1909. The school’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. In the late 1800s, Headmaster Goffin was accused of providing exam answers to students, a scandal that reached Parliament. Despite the controversy, Goffin remained at the school. The school’s resilience is evident in its survival through the Second World War. Evacuated to Tonbridge, then Exmouth, Westminster City School returned to a damaged Palace Street building in 1945. A testament to its enduring spirit, the school continued to thrive. In 2018, Westminster City School celebrated the opening of the Jack Pouchot Building. Dedicated to a former pupil and decorated war hero, the building provides state-of-the-art facilities for music, art, and drama. Westminster City School stands today as a testament to its rich and layered past. It embodies the vision of its founders, offering education to generations of students within the historic heart of Westminster.
