Picture this. You are standing before Westfield Southcenter. A behemoth of retail. A testament to consumerism. But its story is far richer than just shopping bags and credit card swipes.

Westfield Southcenter isn’t just a mall. It’s a historical landmark. A giant in the Pacific Northwest. Its origins trace back to 1956. Three visionaries from Seattle’s Northgate Shopping Center dreamt bigger. They aimed to create a shopping center south of downtown Seattle. A center that would rival Northgate’s success.

They found their perfect location. A sprawling 160 acres. This land sat at the strategic intersection of two major freeways I-5 and I-405. Construction started in 1967. The project was ambitious a 30 million dollar undertaking. John Graham & Company the architects behind Northgate and Tacoma malls designed it. Four labor strikes slowed progress. Yet the mall was largely finished by May 1968. Interior work continued until the grand opening. Twenty-five main contractors and fifty subcontractors were involved. The terrazzo floors were a last-minute addition. They were the largest in the Puget Sound region at 85000 square feet. Thousands of pounds of cement marble chips and sand went into their creation. Thirty thousand feet of zinc divider strips completed the look.

The grand opening on July 31 1968 was a major event. Governor Dan Evans spoke. The mall was enormous 1 400 000 square feet with ninety-two stores and 3600 employees. It was the largest shopping mall in the region at the time.

Westfield Group bought the mall in 2002. They renamed it Westfield Southcenter. A 240 million dollar expansion in 2006 added 400 000 square feet. Stores like Seafood City The Container Store and Din Tai Fung opened over the years replacing others. In 2017 Unibail-Rodamco acquired Westfield Corporation unifying the Westfield brand across North America and Europe. A further expansion is planned with bigger stores and a new restaurant row. The Sears store the last in Washington state closed in December 2024 ending an era.

Westfield Southcenter. More than just shops and restaurants. It’s a piece of Pacific Northwest history. A place where dreams were built. Where consumerism took a new form. Where families gathered and memories were made. A place that continues to evolve and adapt. A testament to its enduring legacy.
