Did Westfield Newmarket always look this impressive? Hardly. Before its grand transformation in 2019, Westfield Newmarket was a modest mall with a Countdown and around 60 stores. In 2005, it boasted NZ$120 million in retail sales. It even housed the New Zealand head offices of the Westfield Group. One retail expert group in 2008 gave Westfield Newmarket a three-out-of-four-star rating. They praised its strong economic performance, but noted the parking situation was a “nightmare”. Westfield Newmarket began a major redevelopment in 2018. This ambitious project doubled the size of the center and quadrupled the number of retailers. The expansion wasn’t without its hiccups. Rumors suggested delays were caused by the reluctance of Village SKYCITY Cinemas to relocate to the new center. The NZ$790 million redevelopment created a retail giant with 230 shops and 2,800 car parks. Westfield Newmarket opened in stages throughout 2019. A gleaming two-level airbridge connects the original 277 Broadway building with the new 309 Broadway expansion. This bridge spans Mortimer Pass and opened in October 2019. The revamped Westfield Newmarket didn’t escape criticism entirely. In November 2019, complaints arose regarding deceptive parking practices. This modern shopping mecca offers a diverse retail experience. From high-end designer boutiques to department stores like David Jones and Farmers, Westfield Newmarket has something for everyone. The Rooftop on Broadway adds a touch of luxury with dining and entertainment options. It’s a dramatic transformation from the smaller mall of the past.
