Picture this. You are standing in Western Springs Illinois. A quaint village 15 miles west of Chicago’s Loop. Its history unfolds before you. Originally flat prairie land with a swamp to the west. Local mineral springs gave Western Springs its name.

Imagine Joseph Vial’s cabin in 1834. A stagecoach stop hotel general store and post office all rolled into one. This humble structure served the entire area after the Black Hawk War. The arrival of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad in 1863 transformed Western Springs. The railroad filled in much of the swamp.

In 1870 the Western Springs Land Association purchased the land. Thomas Clarkson Hill William Page and sons of Phillip F. W. Peck spearheaded this venture. Many early residents were Quakers their deeds often forbidding alcohol sales. The community built a wooden schoolhouse in 1872 and a post office a year later. These early structures paved the way for a growing village.

The iconic Western Springs Water Tower stands as a testament to the village’s ingenuity. Built in 1890 after the original spring dried up it stands 112 feet tall. Constructed from Naperville stone it served as a water source until 1962. It now stands as a museum on the National Register of Historic Places. A symbol of Western Springs resilience and history.

Western Springs continued to grow. A fire department electric plant telephones a park district and a library were added over the years. The village annexed surrounding areas expanding its footprint. Spring Rock Park was established in 1931. Four more parks followed in 1945.

Western Springs made history in 1962. One of the first international satellite calls was made. The call connected Western Springs with its sister city Rugeley England using the Telstar satellite. Western Springs is more than just a village. It is a place of historical significance. A charming community with a rich past.
