A salty breeze whispers secrets of centuries past. Western Port stretches before you a vast expanse of water. Imagine the first Europeans George Bass and his crew in 1798. They sailed into this very bay their whaleboat cutting through the waves. They were far from home lacking food and supplies. Two weeks they spent here exploring this then-unknown wilderness. Western Port became its name because it was the westernmost port charted at that time. A slight misnomer now as it lies east of Port Phillip and Melbourne.

Western Port’s story however is far older than European exploration. The Boonwurrung people called it Warn Marin. For countless generations they thrived here living off the abundant shellfish mutton birds and plant life. Their connection to this land is a legacy we must acknowledge and respect.

The bay’s beauty however wasn’t enough to secure a lasting European settlement. In 1826 a British expedition landed near present-day Corinella. They brought convicts and soldiers establishing a short-lived settlement. It lasted only about a year deemed unsuitable for civilisation. A fascinating failed attempt at colonization. The area’s rugged terrain and limited resources proved challenging.

Today Western Port thrives with a different sort of activity. It supports a rich ecosystem. Whales dolphins and seals frequent its waters. Migratory birds visit its shores. French Island and Phillip Island dominate the landscape. They are home to unique flora and fauna. The three Marine National Parks protect this precious environment.

Yet Western Port’s history is not only about nature. HMAS Cerberus a major Royal Australian Navy training base stands proudly. Industrial activity continues including shipping and oil production facilities. A balance must be struck between progress and environmental protection. A delicate dance between industry and nature.

The modern Western Port is a place of recreation. Fishing boating and yachting are popular. Tourists visit Phillip Island to witness the penguin parade. French Island offers a quieter retreat for those seeking nature’s embrace. Western Port is a place of contrasts where history ecology and modern industry meet. A journey through time reflecting the richness and complexity of this special place.
