Today we stand at Westdene Dam. A small dam is surrounded by a public park. It is a peaceful and well-maintained space. But there is more to this place than meets the eye.

Westdene Dam’s story begins long before it was a park. This area was once part of the farm Braamfontein. The farm was established in 1853. Later, the land was divided. In the early 20th century, this area became a brickfield. Albert Edward Wells started the Wells Brickfield around 1911.

The brickfield shaped the landscape of what is now Westdene Dam. Clay quarrying created small dams. By 1934, maps showed these dams and the first houses. The Wells Brickfield expanded to meet growing demands.

The brickfield closed in 1943. The land was given to the Johannesburg city council. They developed Westdene Park. By 1952, aerial photos show two dams. The south-west dam was “Blue-dam”. The north-east dam was “Westdene-dam”. A footpath separated them. Later they merged into one Westdene Dam.

Westdene Dam is associated with a tragic event. On March 27, 1985, a school bus crashed here. The bus was carrying students from Vorentoe High School. It plunged into the dam. 42 children died. Thirty others were rescued.

The Westdene dam disaster shook the community. The driver lost control. The bus plunged through barriers into the dam. A tyre may have blown out. The bus swerved into another vehicle. Then it crashed into the water.

The Westdene dam disaster is remembered each year. A memorial service is held annually. It takes place every March 27 at Vorentoe High School.

Today Westdene Dam is a place of reflection. It is a reminder of the past. Yet it is also a place of beauty. It is a place to enjoy nature. You can see many beautiful trees here.

Westdene Dam is also evolving. In 2017, the dam and park were upgraded. This was part of the city’s Corridors of Freedom project.

The Westdene suburb has a vibrant art scene. The Westdene Graffiti Project began in 2015. Local artists created murals on property walls. Walking tours showcase this street art.

Westdene Dam offers a place to exercise. There is a lovely playground here. You’ll also find exercise equipment. Many people come to the dam to relax.

Westdene Dam is close to universities. This has led to an influx of students. They seek accommodation in the area.

So, as we stand here at Westdene Dam, remember its history. Remember the tragedy. Appreciate its beauty. This small dam has a big story to tell.
