Fifty years ago Roosevelt High School opened its doors. Imagine the excitement. The new school stood proudly in Roosevelt Park a suburb built for returning World War II veterans. Named after President Franklin D Roosevelt the area reflected a time of hope and rebuilding. Roosevelt High wasn’t just a school. It was a symbol of a new beginning.
Roosevelt Park was booming. Young families needed a high school. The existing schools overflowed. So 22 acres were set aside. Children initially attended classes at the nearby Franklin D Roosevelt Primary School. It’s a fascinating bit of local history.
The school’s founders even sought permission to use part of the Roosevelt family crest. Can you imagine the paperwork? They wanted to honor the president’s legacy. The school’s mission became clear. They wanted to cultivate global citizens. Compassion respect for diversity and a lifelong love of learning were key values.
After 1990 Roosevelt High became one of Johannesburg’s first truly integrated schools. Principal Mr Robinson had eagerly awaited this moment. There was already a waiting list. It symbolized a shift in South Africa itself.
In 2002 the school celebrated its 50th anniversary. It remains a vibrant place. The dedicated staff members some with decades of service create a true family atmosphere. They really care about their students. Roosevelt High continues to uphold its traditions. It strives to reach its potential. It’s a true community. A place where students grow academically and personally. A testament to its enduring legacy.
