How many churches can say they were founded at a picnic? Westchester Community Church can. Back in the summer of 1949, a group of Westchester residents decided it was time their village had a liberal community church. The residents, representing a mix of denominations, held a picnic and out of that simple gathering, the Westchester Community Church was born. The first service was held on November 13, 1949, in the gymnasium of George Nixon School. Dr. Arthur C. McGiffert, President of the Chicago Theological Seminary, led the service. By January of the following year, 163 charter members had joined. It wouldn’t be long until the church found a permanent home. The congregation held their first service in their new building, still under construction, on September 4, 1955. It was a testament to their dedication and hard work. Over the years, the church thrived, adding an Educational Wing in 1968 and finally becoming debt-free in 1983. Through picnics and potlucks, Sunday services and community outreach, Westchester Community Church has remained a steadfast presence in the village, a testament to the power of community and shared faith.
