Contemplate the blend of old and new before us at Westbourne Park Baptist Church. This church is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to community spirit and architectural innovation.
Westbourne Park Baptist Church has a story that stretches back to 1875. A Baptist church was first established near the Royal Oak Underground station. However, World War II dealt a cruel blow. The original church was damaged beyond repair during the Second World War. A replacement was erected in the 1960s. Over time, it became outdated and expensive to maintain. It also negatively impacted the Westbourne Conservation Area.
But from the ashes of the old, a new vision arose. This community-led project sought to create a space for everyone. Dolphin Living partnered with Westbourne Park Baptist Church. Together, they appointed Allies and Morrison to design a unique scheme. The design included new accommodation for the church. It also featured a family center and the Paddington Children’s Library. A community hall and thirty-two affordable homes completed the project.
Look at the ‘campanile’. Notice how it acts as a focal point. It announces the church’s presence at the heart of the area. Large windows invite daylight into the apartments above. This design reflects the building’s multi-use character. It also respects the sensitive heritage of the site.
Consider the choice of brick. Allies and Morrison selected Crème facing brick. This hand-formed cream-colored brick elevates the design’s status. It forms a restrained palette of brick, steel, aluminium, and glass. The materials harmonize with the stucco of nearby villas.
The geometry of the brick modules is important. It expresses the building’s aesthetic. It also helps harmonize its scale with its architectural context. The architects used approximately 150000 bricks for the project.
Crème bricks feature alternating headers and stretchers. This creates an attractive Flemish bond. The 50mm format, combined with splayed reveals, adds order to the building’s massing. The design mediates between the taller buildings of Porchester Road and the smaller-scale homes of Westbourne Park Villas.
Westbourne Park Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a thriving multicultural community. It brings together people from over 30 nationalities. The church also hosts three ethnic churches. These are Filipino, Brazilian/Portuguese, and Eritrean congregations. A Montessori nursery and family center also call this place home.
The building’s exterior reflects its multi-use character. It also addresses the sensitive heritage and residential context. Westbourne Park Baptist Church provides a model for other churches. This innovative approach to redevelopment secures the future of small, thriving communities.
The blending of sacred and secular architecture is delicate. It reflects the neighborhood’s diverse needs. Westbourne Park Baptist Church won a Civic Trust Award in 2021. It also won a Faith + Form Award for Religious Architecture.
