Standing tall on Wickham Road, West Wickham & Shirley Baptist Church is a testament to faith’s enduring power. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history. In 1797, a small group of believers from Birmingham held meetings in a former pub on the corner of Stratford Road and Olton Road. This marked the beginning of Baptist worship in Shirley. The current church building was erected in 1910, funded by Robert and Mrs Braithwaite, in memory of Mrs Braithwaite’s parents, Mr and Mrs Guy. This makes it officially known as the Guy Memorial Chapel. Today, the church thrives as a vibrant community welcoming people of all ages and backgrounds. Open your eyes wider and you’ll see that in 2013, new facilities facing the pedestrianised area of Parkgate were opened. These added a sports hall, meeting rooms, and a coffee shop, creating a lively hub for the community.
