West Suburban Baptist Church

A curious thing happened at West Suburban Baptist Church in 1943. Amidst wartime gasoline rationing, members of the Brookfield congregation yearned for a closer place of worship. West Suburban Baptist Church’s story began there. O.D. Bixler, minister of the Brookfield church, answered their call. He began preaching to the group on Sunday afternoons in Maywood. Initially, they gathered at a location on 17th Avenue. By June 1944, the growing congregation moved to the Masonic Hall in Maywood. They worshipped there until their current sanctuary was completed in August 1956. West Suburban Baptist Church has always been more than just a local church. Their ministry extended beyond the western suburbs of Chicago, impacting lives both near and far. They’ve provided care for the needy and unfortunate, supporting missions in Germany, France, Hong Kong, Africa, Japan, Spain, Russia, and Jamaica. Their members have also worked with the mentally ill, addressed inner-city needs, and supported Christian youth camps and other youth activities. Today, West Suburban Baptist Church continues its mission to “Love God and Our Community,” declaring the Gospel and demonstrating Christ’s love and compassion. They offer Sunday services, including Bible study at 9:15 am and worship at 10:30 am and 5:00 pm. A Wednesday night Bible class is also held at 7:00 pm. They invite anyone seeking spiritual growth and community to join them.
