Marvelous West Square Gardens. A hidden gem in South London. Its story begins in 1791. The Temple West family leased the land. Soon terraces of elegant houses appeared. They surrounded a communal garden. This became a meeting place for the community.

West Square Gardens wasn’t always a tranquil retreat. It once housed staff from the Bethlehem Royal Hospital. This hospital is now the Imperial War Museum. Imagine the bustle of those early days. The square was a mix of domestic life and institutional life.

The 1800s brought more change. The Admiralty built a tower. It was used for a shutter telegraph. This device sent messages across London. This is an interesting fact. The tower stood on the east side of the square.

Then there is Robert Barker. A panorama painter. He lived in the square. He created his works in a round wooden building. His son married a daughter of William Bligh. Bligh commanded the Bounty. West Square Gardens has these connections.

A more somber chapter followed. Charlotte Sharman opened an orphanage in the area. She also had a nursery and an infirmary. This orphanage was later moved. The building is now part of the Imperial War Museum.

A young Charlie Chaplin lived on West Square. He remembered living behind the Bethlem Royal Hospital. He was only three years old. This makes West Square Gardens even more fascinating.

West Square Gardens faced threats. There were plans to build over it. But in 1909 the London County Council saved it. They bought the freehold. Madeline Agar redesigned the gardens. They were opened to the public in 1910.

Today West Square Gardens is a beautiful space. It shows a history of change. It reminds us of the lives lived here. A tree was even planted in 1991 to mark its bicentenary. It’s a quiet space in busy London. Yet it tells a rich and diverse history. West Square Gardens welcomes you. Take a moment to reflect on its story.
