Gazing upon West Side Church, one can’t help but feel a sense of history. West Side Church has been a cornerstone of the West Seattle community for over a century. It started as a humble Sunday school in 1907. The founders prioritized teaching children about the Bible. Originally located on 44th Avenue SW, it was affectionately known as “the little brown church”. West Side Church quickly became known for its powerful gospel preaching. In 1924, Reverend Charles Boppell became the first pastor of West Side Church. A former missionary to South Africa, Reverend Boppell was already a respected Christian leader. He brought a passion for education, expanding the Sunday school and supporting missions. The church thrived under his leadership. The 1940s brought significant growth, necessitating a move. West Side Church found its current home at the corner of California Avenue SW and SW Spokane Street. This location placed it right in the heart of West Seattle. The first service in the new building was held on March 20, 1949. By 1957, the church had expanded its facilities. They doubled the Sunday school space, added a chapel and a library. A new kitchen and a multipurpose auditorium were also part of this expansion. West Side Church continued to evolve. In the 1990s, the nursery and sanctuary were remodeled. Eight stunning stained-glass windows were commissioned, adding beauty and spiritual significance to the space. West Side Church has always been more than just a building. It represents a community of faith, dedicated to serving others and sharing the good news.
