Settled on the ancestral lands of the Duwamish and Suquamish tribes, West Seattle whispers tales of resilience and transformation. West Seattle, a peninsula sculpted by the tides of Puget Sound, first welcomed the Denny Party in 1851. These pioneers, seeking a new beginning, landed at Alki Point, a site the Duwamish called sbaqwabqs, meaning “prairie point”. The Denny Party’s initial settlement, “New York Alki,” reflected their hopes for a bustling metropolis. However, the harsh realities of West Seattle’s exposed western shore led them to relocate across Elliott Bay, to what is now downtown Seattle. West Seattle’s story, though, was far from over. The resilient spirit of those who remained, like Charles C. Terry, laid the foundation for a unique community. West Seattle blossomed into a collection of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character. Alki, the original landing site, transformed into a popular beach destination. The Junction, at the intersection of California Avenue S.W. and S.W. Alaska Street, became a vibrant commercial hub. Industry flourished along Harbor Avenue, while residential areas sprang up in Fauntleroy, Gatewood, and beyond. Connecting West Seattle to the mainland became a unifying cause for its residents. From the first ferry service in 1888 to the contentious battle for the West Seattle Bridge, transportation shaped the peninsula’s destiny. The iconic high-level bridge, finally opened in 1984, stands as a testament to West Seattle’s persistent pursuit of connection. West Seattle today retains a strong sense of independence, a “small-town feeling” amidst the urban landscape. It is a place where the echoes of the past mingle with the vibrancy of the present, a community shaped by the tides, the trees, and the unwavering spirit of its people.
