For nearly 150 years this institution has shaped lives. It began as separate entities. Hammersmith School of Art opened in 1881. Ealing Grammar School followed in 1913. Southall Technical College joined the scene in 1929. These schools eventually merged. The result was the impressive college we see today.
The Hammersmith campus holds a special place. It sits on former playing fields of St Paul’s School. Its Brutalist architecture is inspired by Alvar Aalto. It replaced 11 smaller sites across West London. The college boasts a wide range of courses. These range from entry level to postgraduate studies.
Ealing Green College is another gem. It offers post-GCSE and vocational courses. The Ealing Institute of Media a £11.5 million specialist center is located here. Southall Community College provides access to a sports center and adult learning facilities. An Acton campus also existed but no longer operates.
West London Community College has garnered numerous accolades. It achieved Beacon Status. It won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise. It was the first further education college in London to receive the AoC Charter for International Excellence. It even won a Times Educational Supplement FE Award for Outstanding use of Technology.
This college nurtured exceptional minds. Famous alumni include Sir Steve McQueen. Oscar-winning director Estelle the singer and Jamal Edwards MBE entrepreneur. The list is extensive. It shows the profound impact this institution has had.
