Gazing across the serene waters of West Loch, it’s hard to imagine the chaos that once erupted here. West Loch, a part of the sprawling Pearl Harbor system here in Honolulu, is more than just a picturesque bay. It holds a tragic secret, a story of a wartime disaster largely forgotten by history. West Loch, in May 1944, was a bustling hub of activity. The calm waters were crowded with LSTs, Landing Ship Tanks, preparing for Operation Forager, the invasion of the Mariana Islands. These weren’t just ships; they were floating arsenals, packed with troops, vehicles, fuel, and ammunition. On May 21st, the seemingly peaceful scene was shattered. A mortar round aboard LST-353 detonated, triggering a catastrophic chain reaction. West Loch became an inferno. Explosions ripped through the air, sending fire, debris, and plumes of black smoke billowing skyward. Ships, loaded with volatile cargo, became blazing infernos. The searing heat, the deafening roars, the sheer terror of the moment are difficult to comprehend. The disaster at West Loch claimed the lives of 163 men and injured hundreds more. Many of the casualties were Black soldiers from the segregated 29th Chemical Decontamination Company, highlighting the racial inequalities of the time. In the aftermath, a press blackout was enforced. The incident remained classified for years. The wreckage was swiftly cleared, and the surviving ships sailed on to their mission. The tragedy of West Loch faded into obscurity. Yet, beneath the tranquil surface of this bay lies a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime. The rusted bow of LST-480, still partially visible, serves as a silent memorial to the lives lost. Today, we remember West Loch not just for its beauty, but for the tragic events that unfolded here.
