Could the key to cloning lie within the walls of a Honolulu skyscraper? Here at the Biomedical Science building, part of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), groundbreaking research has propelled Hawaiʻi to the forefront of biomedical innovation. JABSOM, home to the largest biomedical research facility in Hawaiʻi, stands as a testament to the islands’ commitment to scientific advancement. Within these walls, history was made. In 1998, Dr. Ryuzo Yanagimachi and his team achieved international recognition for developing the Honolulu Technique for cloning mice. Years later, in 2023, Dr. Yanagimachi was posthumously awarded the Kyoto Prize for his groundbreaking contributions to fertilization mechanisms and microinsemination technology. JABSOM is not just a hub for cutting-edge research. It also houses the nation’s first clinical department in an accredited medical school dedicated to addressing health disparities among Native Hawaiians. This focus reflects the school’s deep commitment to serving the local community. The research at JABSOM covers a wide range of fields. These include human fertility, human heredity, comparative genetics, evolution theory, infectious disease, and heart disease. They also research metabolic diseases, neurological disorders, aging, mental health, HIV/AIDS, pharmacology, and cross-cultural psychiatry. The work on Hansen’s Disease continues Hawaiʻi’s legacy of contributing to global health. JABSOM’s centers of excellence foster collaborative partnerships. These partnerships help address diseases that disproportionately affect the local community, furthering their mission of healing and improving lives in Hawaiʻi.
