Initially the area was marshy and sparsely settled. A brickyard and an artesian well briefly existed. They were abandoned leaving behind a dangerous pond. Later the development of the industrial district in Clearing spurred growth. The extension of a street railway connected West Lawn to this burgeoning area. By 1930 the population was nearly 9000. Many were German Irish Czech Polish and Italian immigrants along with a small Lithuanian population.
The Great Depression temporarily slowed progress. Vacant paved streets contrasted with bustling unpaved streets full of new homes. World War II brought renewed growth. Midway Airport expanded. Nearby industrial development attracted new residents. A factory produced bomber engines during the war. Post war it made cars. The Chicago Housing Authority built homes for veterans. Unfortunately racial tensions erupted in 1946. Racial integration was resisted.
Population exploded after World War II. This was fueled by white ethnic migration from changing neighborhoods. New Catholic parishes were formed. Parish schools boomed. The Ford City Shopping Center opened in 1965. Manufacturers like Tootsie Roll and Sweetheart Cup set up shop nearby. Richard J Daley College a Federal Records Center and an army reserve base also opened.
Pulaski and 63rd Street became a retail center. The West Lawn Branch Library opened in 1986. It quickly became one of the busiest branches. The Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture also found a home in the area. Mexican and Arab families and businesses began to populate the area. Midway Airport’s revival and the CTA Orange Line have boosted property values. The West Lawn Branch Library continues to serve its community. It is a vital community resource. It reflects the enduring spirit of West Lawn. It thrives as a center of learning and community engagement.
