Behold the West Kalimantan Pavilion a vibrant portal to Indonesia’s westernmost province.
This pavilion isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to West Kalimantan’s rich tapestry of cultures. Dayaks Malays Chinese and others all call this diverse land home. The pavilion showcases their unique traditions. It does this through stunning architecture and captivating displays.
Notice the first building. Its design mirrors the Kadriah Sultanate Palace. Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie built this palace in 1771. He’s a pivotal figure in Pontianak’s history. A statue of him and his consort Utin Chandramidi stands proudly within. They are dressed in the traditional Melayu Telok Belanga and Baju Kurung. Miniature cannons and the sultanate’s flag add to the regal atmosphere. These represent the Malay heritage of West Kalimantan.
But West Kalimantan is more than just Malay heritage. Step into the second building. It’s a Betang House or Panjang House a traditional Dayak longhouse. These incredible structures house dozens of families. Observe the single long piece of wood used for the ladder. Note that it has no handrail. This is typical Dayak architecture. The front section is used for drying. The middle section is reserved for ceremonies. Enclosed chambers provide privacy for the families. You’ll also see a Sandung a place where human bones are stored. There is even a Baluk a traditional house of the Dayak Bidayuh. It’s used for the annual Nyobeng ritual.
The West Kalimantan Pavilion offers a fascinating glimpse into daily life. It displays traditional items such as Mandau blowpipes shields and sarang palilit a women’s headgear. At certain times you can even witness traditional dances like the Jepin and the Luing.
Remember the Festival Meriam Karbit. This vibrant celebration started with Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie. He used cannons to drive away spirits. Today massive cannons still echo through the streets.
